The humble doorbell doesn’t usually register for a lot of homeowners. It’s like a couch; you find one, you put it in your house, and then it starts doing its job. You don’t notice it until it breaks, really. Ring, however, wants to change that by tying your doorbell to your iPhone, so that you can always answer the door.
Ding Dong Doorbot
If Ring sounds familiar, that’s because it started life as the Doorbot. The basic concept is still the same; you install Ring on your front door, instead of your normal doorbell button. Once somebody comes up and rings the bell, your phone is contacted, and you can open the app and see who it is. You also had audio functionality to interrogate unknown visitors.
But that was two years ago, and a lot’s changed since we last saw the Doorbot at work. And, we might add, all for the better.
Doorbell Reloaded
First of all, it’s gotten a few upgrades; the camera is now HD, with a 180-degree field of view, and the battery has gotten an overhaul so that you’re no longer swapping out double-As. It also means it’ll work for a full year on a 5200 mAh battery. It’s also, of course, rated to be outdoors; it’ll take temperatures from below zero to above one hundred degree Fahrenheit. It has night vision capability, and will even upload video it records to the cloud. And it comes with its own weather sealant to ensure that you get the most out of your purchase.
Door To Everywhere
There are some pretty distinct advantages to Ring that you might not first think about. Imagine, finally being able to get one over on the UPS guy by approving a package verbally, so he can’t leave that annoying yellow sticky. Really, for $200 on preorder, who can turn that down?
