Google, Samsung, Archos and now OPPO: what’s common between these smart devices/services operators? Quite a bit, but something that’s meant to catch your eye (in the literal sense) is the VR projects these companies have going on. We’re well acquainted with Google’s take on VR (read: Google Cardboard); China’s OPPO seems to be working on one of their own such kits.
OPPO has quite a bit going on. The next flagship from the N series of smartphones from the Chinese OEM is set to launch on the 29th this month, in Singapore. OPPO’s also been typically active, posting teasers and peeks at the N3. It’s supposed to carry over the acclaimed swivel camera design from the N1 of last year, along with some enhancements which could possibly include a motorized swivel module, and perhaps even a fingerprint scanner. The OPPO N1 was a lot of firsts; it was (claimed to be) the first smartphone with a swivel camera, and it certainly was the first to have a rear-touch panel that we know as ‘O-Touch’.
Coming back to the VR kit, like a lot of OPPO products that are often more expensive than equivalents (or thereabouts) from other Chinese OEMs, the VR kit too will most probably not be the most affordable one around. Samsung’s Gear VR sells for $199, but requires a Galaxy Note 4 that costs manifold as much. OPPO would want to cut into the affordable VR segment of the market, but it’s going to be difficult for the company to make it more affordable than the Google Cardboard VR kit.
OPPO’s gone from being a China-only brand to a much more internationally-acceptable company in a matter of only a few months. The VR spark ignited by Oculus sometime back seems to have ignited the likes of OPPO and a handful other companies we talked about, which makes it an interesting battle to look forward to. Outlets in China are reporting that this piece of kit will launch alongside the OPPO N3, but there’s no official work from the maker yet. Your take?
