This morning we are taking a look at a few interesting tech stories. The main topics involve delays, launches and even product deaths.
Larger iPads delayed?
2014 is the year of larger Apple devices, and one of them was supposed to be the iPad. Recent rumors said a 12.9-inch iPad was in the works, and would probably be announced with the new iPad Air and iPad Mini (which are to be unveiled on October 16th).
Anonymous sources are now telling the Wall Street Journal there will be no larger iPad until “early next year”. The project is said to have been pushed back as the company switches focus to the huge demand on their new iPhones.
Opinion: While I understand the need for larger phones, I am not sure how many of you would like a 12.9-inch tablet. It seems a little excessive to me.
Much better Google Hangouts app released
The Hangouts Chrome extension app can be a bit wonky at times. You can only use it when Chrome is open and it keeps acting weird. Thankfully, Google has decided to launch a new and improved app.
It’s still a Chrome app, but this one happens to work as a dedicated application. It can run even without the Chrome browser running, and there is a very drastic re-design. The new app focuses on messaging and takes on a whole new UI. In fact, it looks much like Facebook’s Chatheads.
You can get the new app straight from the Chrome Web Store. It’s compatible with Windows and Chrome OS. OS X users can also get it, but it won’t work the same way.
Opinion: Hangouts really needed something like this! To say the least, the Hangouts extension kinda sucked. We are glad to see these improvements.
Sprint shutting down WiMax on November 6, 2015
We don’t know why it has taken so long to do this, but Sprint is finally ready to shut its WiMax network down. The outdated network is said to die on, or around, November 6, 2015.
Phones that use WiMax will fall under the carrier’s 3G network after these changes take effect. Sprint is also advising MVNO’s to tell their customers about these changes, which will also affect them.
Opinion: Really, WiMax should have died long ago. I feel like those resources and efforts could have been invested in further improving their 4G LTE network.
