Google is updating all the things related to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The SDK and device preview builds got updated today. They are also updating the official Material Design guidelines. This is the guide that’s going to help developers and designers make their apps look all snazzy and Material Design-y. Google first dropped Material Design on us in June, but this guide is quite a bit updated and changed from what we saw a few short months ago. Google isn’t done making changes, either. They’re calling this a “living document” that will continue to morph into what they envision for Android to look like.
Some of the new stuff in this guideline update has to do with sticker sheets specifically formatted for Adobe products like Sketch and Illustrator, as well as Photoshop. There are new system icons, new color swatches, new whiteframe downloads, and an updated icon library. The new sticker sheets have been streamlined to be easier to use, and include “various elements that make up layouts, including light and dark symbols for the status bar, app bar, bottom toolbar, cards, dropdowns, search fields, dividers, navigation drawers, dialogs, the floating action button, and other components. The sticker sheets now also include explanatory text for elements.”
Material Design will be fully rolling out to us with Android 5.0 Lollipop, but tons of Google apps and third-party apps have been updated to take on Google’s new design language. Most of our favorite Google apps, like Chrome, YouTube, Google+, and the Play Store have taken on some elements of Material Design. Google is still refining the look, though. The Material Design look has been tweaked since Google I/O 2014 in June. This update is already changing how we look at Android. We can’t wait until it’s officially rolled out with Android 5.0 Lollipop.
