Google Now vs Siri vs Cortana

Siri

The battle between Android, iOS and Windows Phone is probably the fiercest one we have seen in the tech industry. This is the age of communications, and no mistake will be forgiven by the community.

Which is the best operating system? Which is the best phone? Answers to such questions are subjective and relative to needs. Can we tell you which one has the best digital assistant, though? It’s definitely easier, and research is now crowning one of these as king.

As digital assistants, these voice-activated services offer a plethora of different features and commands. They are more than your secretary, though. These services also respond to a bunch of questions, tapping into the internet to keep you informed and educated.

The systems that get all the info are called knowledge graphs and that is what the guys at Stone Temple based their research on. In short, these results really tell you which service is the best encyclopedia.

Enough said – who is the winner? Not surprisingly, Google seems to be the winner in this fight. This makes sense, as they hold the most popular search engine in the world, managing information from an enormous list of topics. In a way, many would consider it the internet’s library.

The test

To name a winner, Stone Temple made a list of 3086 questions. These queries where then applied to each assistant and compared across platforms. Google proved to be way ahead of the competition in multiple ways.

For one, Google returned more complex results 58% of the time. This includes knowledge boxes, panels or structured snippets. Siri and Cortana fell behind with 29% and 20%, accordingly.

Those numbers are not very flattering, but maybe the losing competitors still know the answers to most other questions, right? Wrong. Results on addressed questions were just as depressing for the Apple and Microsoft alternatives.

Google answered 88% of all questions, while Apple fell behind at 53% and Cortana was left int he dirt with a 40% score.

So… are Siri and Cortana horrible?

We wouldn’t say so. This is a knowledge base competition, meaning Google just happens to know the answer to more questions. Siri and Cortana still give you great links and search results when they can’t answer a query.

It’s also important to note the guys at Stone Temple were pretty rough with these services. They would only count direct answers.

“The scoring here was harsh. If you asked “how old is the great wall of China” and the knowledge panel result showed that the Great Wall was completed in 206 BC, you got no credit.”

It must also be mentioned that Cortana is still on beta, and all of these services focus on different things. Google Now is known for its knowledge base and helpful quick commands. Siri can be considered a much more conversational assistant. Cortana is advertised as more of a digital assistant than a goo resource for information.

These are all different and I have found they work great, Google just happens to be better at clearing up your doubts. And this may well change in the future.

I happen to love Google Now because it’s much simpler and doesn’t beat around the bush. Answers are direct and the service does what it needs to with no bells and whistles. Which one is your favorite digital assistant?
