“There’s an app for that”. That’s the famous phrase that Apple used to use all the time for their App Store. And it is true for Google Play as well. There’s over a million apps in the Play Store so there’s an app for just about everything out there. Today, we’re looking at travel apps. Lately, I’ve been traveling for different events from Motorola, ZTE, HTC and Sony. I’ve actually used a good number of these apps over the past month and a half.
Waze Social GPS Maps & Traffic
While Google did buy Waze a few months ago, they haven’t quite brought all of Waze’s features into the Google Maps app. What Waze does is it shows you where heavy traffic is, and users can report where accidents are. So that users can avoid that route and get where they are going quicker. Which is always a nice thing to have.
TripAdvisor Hotels Flights
TripAdvisor is a great app to help you find great hotels and flights for where and when you’re traveling. What I really like is the forum aspect here. What you can do is ask questions to the community about all kinds of things and you’ll get some great answers. You can also see reviews of hotels that aren’t on the hotels’ website, as those sometimes could be skewed to make the hotel look good.
Eat24
Many of you probably already know about EAT24. But you can order food from a ton of local places, without calling anyone or leaving your house. Which is really convenient and will definitely make some people lazy. I actually used this while I was in Chicago for Motorola’s event and it worked flawlessly.
Uber
In a new city that you’ve never been in before? Don’t want a taxi? Well there’s Uber. Uber has been taking a lot of money out of cabbies, pockets. It’s basically a more modern taxi system. Using the app, you can call an Uber car. The app will show you where your driver is, and how long before they get to you. Additionally you can pay your driver from the app as well as sharing the cost with your friends if they are riding with you.
Fly Delta
You’re probably wondering why I included Delta and American Airlines apps in this list, and not other airlines. Well, at the time of writing this, they are the only ones supporting Android Wear. So with Fly Delta you can scan your boarding pass from your watch. Pretty sweet right? You can also check your gate info, your Skymiles and so much more.
American Airlines
Much like the Fly Delta app, the AA app also supports Android Wear. With the American Airlines app, you can also scan your boarding pass from the app, as well as check into your flight, choose your seats, book a flight and so much more. It’s a really great app.
Foursquare
With the new Foursquare, you can find nearby restaurants, clubs and so much more. Which is especially helpful if you are new to a city, or visiting a big city like New York City or Chicago. If you’re looking for the old part of Foursquare where you can check in and such, you’ll want Swarm.
Transit App
This is a fantastic app. For those that prefer to take public transportation (which I do, since my parents work in public transportation), it’s a great way to find out when the next bus, train, or subway will be here. While I was in New York I used this to get to and from the Airport, hotel and HTC/Sony events. It was an amazing app and looks great as well.
FlightAware Flight Tracker
If you’re an Aviation geek like me, then this is a pretty cool app to have. You can use this to track flights in the area, or even flights that your loved ones are on, to be sure they arrive safe. Which is probably the most popular use case for FlightAware.
TripIt
This is a great app for organizing your itinerary when traveling. I have used it for all three of my most recent trips. It can automatically scan your email for emails about flights, hotels, cars, etc. It’s actually a really nice app to use.
