Amp Kicks Up Your iPhone’s Sound

Our smartphones are good at a lot of things, but offering high quality audio is decidedly not one of them. It’s just the nature of the beast; the speakers and microphones have to be crammed in there somehow, so they have to be tiny. Tiny drivers means tinny sound, but some people see another way. Namely, the people who made the Amp case.

Drivers, And Lots Of Them

As you might have guessed from the name, the Amp is a case that improves your audio. Essentially, it’s two speakers and a digital signal processor that you can clip your phone into at any time to improve audio performance. Think of it as kind of a small boom box that you can put your phone into to play back music or calls. More interesting, though, is the internal brain.

Can You Hear What I Hear?

The team behind Amp is claiming that they’re able to figure out exactly how you hear. You pop in your iPhone, boot up the companion app that’s more or less obligatory at this point, and go through the steps. From there, it uses the “hearing fingerprint” it develops to dynamically play back sound so that you better hear it, whether it’s the music you’re listening to or the call you have to pick up. It also serves as a noise reduction tool for your headphones, which is handy.

Not everybody will want a high-powered audio tool for their phone, of course, but it might be worth considering if, for example, you have to put calls on speaker in order to hear them. Besides, especially if you use your phone to play back music in the room, it’s hard to complain about something that makes that better for just $70 if you preorder. Even if it does, temporarily, make your phone bigger.
