Sony sold the VAIO brand to Japan Communications almost a year ago and since then, the new owner has been working to rebuild the brand. There are only a small number of products that VAIO currently sell but this is reckoned to be changing in a few weeks time with the new VAIO smartphone. With the 2015 Mobile World Congress, or MWC, just a few days away it’s possible that we will get to see the device sooner than the announcement date of the 12 March. And until now we’ve had very little in the way of detail about the new smartphone other than it would be based around a 5.0-inch display and not be priced at the high end. We did, however, see the retail box a few weeks ago. However, today the VAIO smartphone has been put through benchmarks and we have a better idea of the device specifications. We don’t yet know the full picture, as I’ll come on to.
VAIO smartphone model number JCI VA-10J is based around that 5.0-inch display previously rumored, but it appears to be a 720p resolution panel. The smartphone uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which is a new generation 64-bit, quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. It’s backed up by 2 GB of memory and there’s 16 GB of internal storage. Around the back, there’s a 13 MP camera and at the front, a 5 MP camera. The device will run Android 5.0 Lollipop but at this juncture, we don’t know if the operating system will have a skin on the top. We also don’t know if the VAIO smartphone will come with LTE or not, nor do we know the size of the battery or if there’s a MicroSD slot for memory expansion.
Going by the numbers, the VAIO VA-10J looks to be a respectable mid-range device. Combining a modern 64-bit processor with a 720p resolution display and 2 GB of RAM should make the experience smooth and fuss free and assuming VAIO are not trying to release a very thin design, it may well have a reasonable battery size. This should bodes well for battery life, too, but we will have to wait until we have seen the full specification of the device.
